To raise funds for research into brain tumours initially on a national level, followed by global
When Mike Mason was diagnosed with his illness he didnt know where to turn to for help. He also realised how much his family needed support as well as himself. Thinking of others, he set up the Thorne Mason Trust in order to provide more support and information for
people in Pembrokeshire who were affected by a
brain tumour or cancer, raise awareness and raise funding for research into brain tumours, an illness that had hit his family more than once.
Set up a monthly drop in session offering advice, support and free complementary therapies
Since being in founded in 2008 we are proud to announce that the Thorne Mason Trust has now
raised over £40, 000
Thanks to our kind supporters we are now able to use the money we have raised to help people in Pembrokeshire who are affected by brain tumours or cancer and to fund vital research into brain tumours. When Mike founded the Thorne Mason Trust in 2008 he had a clear 'vision' for the charity and thanks to your donations we now able to work towards achieving his aims...
We are fortunate to have a great team of volunteers on board, which means our running costs are very little. Therefore the majority of the money raised goes directly to helping individual people and sponsoring specific days of research, really making a difference to the lives of brain tumour and cancer sufferers.
To be in a position to collate and share the latest information on brain tumours and cancer and to advise about other charities/organisations that can help people in Pembrokeshire
To open our own complementary brain tumour and cancer care centre based in Pembrokeshire
To duplicate the centre in other parts of the UK and Europe
The Thorne Mason is also raising money to fund vital research into brain tumours. We have recently become members of Brain Tumour Reserach UK, working together with 18 other charities to provide support and funding for brain tumours across the UK.
We are hoping to make a significant contribution to brain tumour research in the near future supporting the `Wall of Hope' appeal which aims to raise £1m for research at the Brain Tumour Research centre of excellence at the University of Portsmouth. The wall marks the launch of Brain Tumour Research's national £7m `Centres of Hope' fundraising campaign to raise £7m for seven centres of excellence to get seven times closer to finding a cure for brain tumours.
Currently the Thorne Mason Trust uses the money raised to run a monthly brain tumour and cancer support session in Pembrokeshire - This is the only support group specific to brain tumours in West Wales!
These sessions are open to anyone within the Pembrokeshire area who has been affected by a brain tumour or cancer including sufferers, their familes, friends and carers.
We are also able to use our funds to support local brain tumour and cancer sufferers and their families outside of these sessions. Our aim is to provide different services to those already existing in Pembrokeshire so that we can help make everyday life a little bit easier for sufferers and their familes. Because we are a small charity we are able to work on a personal level and provide services to suit the specific needs of individuals.
Services we have provided in the
past include:
>FREE complementary therapies @ home
>Funding visits to the Penny Brohn Cancer Care
Centre in Bristol
>Funding dinner in local restuarants for sufferers and
their families
>Contributing funds for transport to and from hospital
for cancer patients and their families
Our future aims are to fund and provide a range services to suit the needs of individuals such as:
> Gardening
> Cleaning
> Organic Vegetable Box Delivery
> Hair and Beauty Treatments
> Transport
To enable the University of Portsmouth's centre of excellence to focus on a three year programme of brain tumour research it will need £1million per annum. Put simply,
over a course of 365 days in a year, thats £2,740 per day.
Our aim is to Sponsor as many days
of research as possible.
